Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide advanced technical and nursing support for urgent care patients, assisting veterinarians with triage, diagnostics, and treatment of non-routine and emergent cases. This role requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Flexible scheduling is available, including daytime, evening, and overnight shifts. Overnight shifts require a high level of independence, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to manage hospitalized patients with limited on-site staffing.
Must be able to withstand unpleasant odors and noises. May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste, anesthesia gases, and contagious diseases.
Reporting Structure
Directly reports to the Lead Technician and works alongside Urgent Care veterinarians and clinical staff. Periodically receives direction from the Lead Technician, Department Supervisors, Office Manager, Practice Manager, and veterinarians.
Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Assists veterinarians with urgent care appointments, triage, and treatment of incoming cases.
- Obtains patient histories and performs initial assessments as directed.
- Places IV catheters, collects samples, and administers medications.
- Assists with sedation and anesthesia, including induction, monitoring, and recovery.
- Monitors hospitalized patients and responds appropriately to changes in condition.
- Provides nursing care including fluid therapy, wound care, and patient comfort.
- Overnight: Independently monitors hospitalized patients, maintains treatment schedules, and communicates with on-call veterinarians as needed. May be responsible for managing multiple patients with minimal direct supervision.
Medical Records
- Maintains accurate and complete medical records, anesthesia logs, and treatment sheets.
- Ensures all services and charges are recorded appropriately.
- Provides detailed patient updates and ensures continuity of care during shift changes.
Diagnostics
- Assists with diagnostic procedures including laboratory sample collection, in-house testing, and imaging support.
- Supports urgent diagnostic needs and communicates results to the veterinary team.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
- Prepares exam rooms and treatment areas for incoming cases.
- Maintains anesthesia and monitoring equipment.
- Cleans and disinfects treatment areas and equipment.
- Assists with stocking and inventory of medical supplies.
Personal Conduct
- Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and teamwork.
- Maintains punctuality and flexibility with scheduling, including overnight coverage.
- Prioritizes tasks effectively in a high-demand environment.
Additional Duties
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Current RVT/LVT/CVT license (state-appropriate).
- Minimum of one year of experience in urgent care, emergency, or general practice preferred.
- Strong anesthesia and patient monitoring skills.
- Ability to work daytime, evening, and/or overnight shifts.
- Ability to work independently during overnight shifts with limited supervision.
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to high-quality patient care and client service.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance and more with assistance.
- Ability to remain on task for the duration of scheduled shifts, including overnight hours.
