Orthopedic Surgery
Canine cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries are a common issue in dogs and often need surgery, like the TPLO procedure. At COVE, we specialize in these surgeries and perform around 1,200 TPLOs each year. We also treat other orthopedic problems, including medial/lateral patella luxations, complex CCL/ACL cases, and fracture repairs, showing our wide range of expertise in dog orthopedics.
TPLO (Tibal Plateau Leveling Osteotomy)
The gold standard Cranial Cruciate Ligament (the CCL is the dog version of and ACL) repair. CCL injuries in dogs are a degenerative disease where the healthy CCL wears down over time and eventually tears. For this reason dogs have approximately a 60% chance of tear both CCLs. With a TPLO the CCL is not repaired, the bone is manipulated to remove the need for the CCL. TPLOs are the most common procedure performed at COVE. Our surgery teams perform approximately 1200 TPLOs a year. Needless to say we know what we are doing!
Medial Patella Luxation(MPL) / Lateral Patella Luxation (LPL) Corrections
Patellar luxations are one of the most common elective orthopedic procedures we perform. This procedure primarily involves correcting the malalignment of the patellar apparatus (either a tibial deformity or femoral deformity). These procedures are performed daily by our surgery teams.
Advanced CCL/ACL Correction or combination CCL/ACL+ MPL Corrections
Not all CCL/ACL cases are created equal. Complicating factors such as excessive/pathologic tibial plateau angles or CCL/ACL tears with concurrent patellar luxations can make for a complicated case. Our surgery teams are prepared to handle any case involving a torn CCL. Surgical procedures involving excessive tibial plateau angles include modified closing cranial wedge (Modified CCW) or CCW + TPLO combination surgery.
Fracture Repairs
Our surgery teams at COVE are prepared to repair most fracture involving most long bones. We are equipped with numerous fracture repair systems to ensure that we have the tools and implants available to put your pets back together.
Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) Repairs
OCD lesions typically occur in large, fast-growing breeds. The disease results when a flap of cartilage detaches from the bone resulting severe inflammation and discomfort. The surgical repair involves removing the flap of cartilage and sometimes filling the defect with an implant to restore the anatomical joint surface.
