Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to assist the Internal Medicine veterinarians with outpatient appointments, advanced diagnostics, and procedures requiring anesthesia and sedation. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and comfort working with complex medical cases. Mustbe able to withstand unpleasant odors and noises. May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste, anesthesia gases, and contagious diseases.
Reporting Structure
Directly reports to the Lead Technician and works alongside the Internal Medicine veterinarian(s). Periodically receives direction from the Lead
Technician, Specialty Technicians, Office Manager, Practice Manager, and veterinarians. May assist other specialty, surgical, or Emergency services as directed based on hospital needs.
Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Assists Internal Medicine veterinarians during appointments, recheck examinations, and procedures.
- Prepares patients for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including appropriate restraint and positioning.
- Induces, monitors, and recovers patients under anesthesia or sedation.
- Assists with and monitors patients during procedures including, but not limited to:
- Endoscopy
- Tracheal washes
- Esophagostomy tube placements
- Joint taps
- Bone biopsies
- Monitors patients closely throughout anesthesia and recovery and promptly reports abnormalities to the veterinarian.
- Provides routine patient care, including cleaning, administering medications, and ensuring patient comfort.
Medical Records
- Completes and maintains accurate medical records, anesthesia logs, and procedural documentation.
- Ensures all treatments, diagnostics, and charges are accurately recorded.
- Assists veterinarians with completing medical and procedural templates as required.
Diagnostics
- Assists with sample collection, preparation, and submission as directed by the veterinarian.
- Assists with advanced diagnostics and imaging when needed.
- Supports veterinarians and other staff members during complex diagnostic procedures.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
- Prepares procedure and treatment areas and gathers all necessary instruments and equipment.
- Cleans, packages, and sterilizes instruments and equipment according to hospital protocols.
- Maintains anesthesia machines, monitoring equipment, endoscopy equipment, and related supplies.
- Ensures proper care, cleaning, and storage of specialized Internal Medicine equipment.
- Maintains inventory of medical and procedural supplies and requests replacements as needed.
- Thoroughly cleans and maintains treatment, procedure, and work areas.
Personal Conduct
- Adheres to all hospital policies, standards, and procedures, including uniforms, grooming, attendance, and workplace conduct.
- Serves as a representative of the hospital by displaying professionalism, courtesy, and a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, patients, and team members.
- Demonstrates initiative by assisting other departments and team members during downtime.
- Adheres to posted work schedules and follows hospital policies for reporting lateness or absences.
- Organizes work area and manages time effectively to maximize efficiency.
- Maintains professionalism and composure while prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Duties
- Attends departmental and staff meetings as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management or veterinarians.
Requirements
- Current RVT license.
- Minimum of one year of experience in veterinary practice or specialty setting preferred.
- Strong anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery skills.
- Comfort assisting with advanced Internal Medicine procedures, including endoscopy,
tracheal washes, esophagostomies, joint taps, and bone biopsies. - Ability to properly restrain patients safely and humanely.
- Knowledge of commonly used veterinary terminology and medical procedures.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks independently and within allotted time frames.
- Demonstrated compassion for patients and empathy toward clients.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to high-quality patient care and client service.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance and heavier objects with assistance.
- Ability to remain on task and work efficiently for the duration of scheduled shifts, which may occasionally exceed standard hours.
