Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide technical support for urgent care and surgical cases across multiple hospital locations. Responsibilities include patient triage, anesthesia monitoring, and assisting with surgical and emergency procedures. This role requires flexibility, strong technical skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to varying hospital environments. Travel is a significant component of this position, with 50–75% of time spent working at different locations. Must be able to withstand unpleasant odors and noises. May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste, anesthesia gases, and contagious diseases.
Reporting Structure
Directly reports to the Lead Technician and works alongside veterinarians across urgent care, surgery, and emergency services. Periodically receives direction from the Lead Technician, Office Manager, Practice Manager, and veterinarians at assigned locations.
Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Assists veterinarians with urgent care appointments, triage, and emergency procedures.
- Prepares patients for surgical and urgent care procedures, including proper restraint and positioning.
- Induces, monitors, and recovers patients under anesthesia for surgical cases.
- Assists with surgical procedures, including scrubbing in as needed.
- Monitors patients throughout treatment and recovery and promptly reports abnormalities.
- Provides nursing care, including administering medications, placing catheters, and maintaining patient comfort.
- Adapts to varying workflows, caseloads, and team dynamics across multiple hospital locations.
Medical Records
- Maintains accurate and complete medical records, anesthesia logs, and treatment documentation.
- Ensures all services, procedures, and charges are properly recorded.
- Communicates clearly with team members to ensure continuity of care across locations.
Diagnostics
- Assists with diagnostic procedures, including sample collection and imaging support as needed.
- Supports veterinarians and staff with urgent and emergent diagnostic needs.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
- Prepares surgical and treatment areas and ensures all necessary equipment is available.
- Cleans, packages, and sterilizes surgical instruments and supplies.
- Maintains anesthesia machines, monitoring equipment, and surgical tools.
- Ensures proper setup and breakdown of workspaces at each location.
- Assists in maintaining inventory and communicates supply needs to appropriate personnel.
Personal Conduct
- Adheres to all hospital policies, standards, and procedures across all assigned locations.
- Represents the hospital in a professional manner, demonstrating flexibility, teamwork, and a positive attitude.
- Demonstrates initiative by assisting team members and integrating into new environments quickly.
- Maintains reliability with scheduling, punctuality, and travel commitments.
- Organizes work efficiently and prioritizes tasks in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
Additional Duties
- Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management or veterinarians.
Requirements
- Current RVT license.
- Minimum of one year of experience in veterinary urgent care, surgery, or emergency setting preferred.
- Strong anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery skills.
- Experience assisting with surgical procedures and emergency cases preferred.
- Ability to work independently and adapt quickly in new clinical environments.
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 50–75% of the time between hospital locations.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Ability to properly restrain patients safely and humanely.
- Knowledge of commonly used veterinary terminology and procedures.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to high-quality patient care and client service.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance and heavier objects with assistance.
- Ability to work long or varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, or extended hours as needed.
